00:00 - [Music] 00:08 - [Music] 00:13 - hi I'm Jim - I'm John Grafton and we 00:19 - found a small beehive here that's moved 00:21 - into a compost bin small hive but it's 00:25 - in the wrong place 00:26 - bees in the wrong place don't work out 00:28 - well in the future so I'm gonna 00:30 - videotape it while John goes through the 00:32 - process of seeing if we can transfer 00:34 - this colony to a standard sized beehive 00:37 - you up for it we're gonna give it a shot 00:39 - okay then we're going to lift this top 00:44 - up and see just what's going on 00:46 - underneath just put a little smoke the 00:49 - kind of going in between the two pieces 00:51 - of wood here on the top so little smoke 00:54 - as we wouldn't if it was a normal 00:56 - beehive so I lift this up you can see 01:02 - the comb hanging from the lower side 01:06 - gently tin it over we don't really want 01:11 - to upset the bees out much we really 01:13 - want to try to keep everything as intact 01:16 - as possible 01:18 - what we've done is we have a standard 01:23 - frame without foundation without comb 01:26 - we've put some bubble bands around it 01:29 - just in preparation for this project and 01:33 - I think on this particular one I'm going 01:37 - to try to just cut each one of these 01:39 - pieces of comb off set them in this 01:44 - frame and then place them down into the 01:46 - colony so as we get ready to do this 01:49 - we're just going to try to take one 01:52 - piece of coma at a time this is just a 01:54 - small piece on the outside edge these 01:58 - beads it's not a big big bunch of bees 02:01 - in a big swarm 02:54 - okay there's one piece in the flame 02:57 - outlets if we can get this next piece 02:59 - off sometimes when you're taking these 03:06 - kind of colonies out of places that 03:09 - they're not supposed to be maybe it's a 03:12 - wall of a house maybe it's a tree that 03:16 - is blown down and get some pretty good 03:19 - slabs of comb and get stuff that's older 03:23 - than this so it's a lot stiffer than 03:25 - what this is I haven't actually seen the 03:28 - Queen 03:29 - I've only been about half looking for to 03:32 - be honest with you just so that we can 03:36 - if we do spot or we can make note that 03:40 - she is this she's you know we don't want 03:42 - to damage you in any way okay I've got 03:52 - enough room in that flame that I think 03:55 - this piece will fit right at the end of 03:58 - that so I'm going to jump around to this 04:00 - side see if I can't scrape it off 04:11 - [Music] 04:24 - okay now we've got those three little 04:26 - pieces of comb in that they're not held 04:30 - real tight 04:31 - they'll probably slip to the bottom we 04:34 - really don't want that to happen but 04:36 - it's just the size of them and the 04:38 - weight on they're gonna slide to the 04:39 - bottom of this flame when we turn it 04:41 - right-side up in them in the box 04:43 - I did see the Queen on that next piece 04:46 - we're going to gently turn this over so 04:51 - that we don't completely shake 04:52 - everything loose as we make the 04:54 - transition we try to just ease it down 05:00 - into this box now you can see those one 05:04 - two slide but they go in now it leaves 05:13 - us this one last piece to hell with the 05:16 - compost bin we've got two three down in 05:20 - the hive 05:25 - I don't see the Queen right now let you 05:31 - go this year there's a queen right had 05:35 - in the middle Stearns if she is moving 05:38 - right up across this way so see if I 05:44 - can't maybe get hold up and we'll just 05:46 - transfer her down down into yeah yeah a 05:54 - guy just got to buy the one wing which I 05:56 - really don't like to catch her that way 05:58 - but I'm God are there between my fingers 06:04 - and now she's trying not to squeeze it 06:07 - too much just gently enough you can hold 06:10 - on to it would drop her down into the 06:14 - box with the other B so it's already in 06:16 - there and then we know that she's in 06:18 - then we won't have to worry about 06:21 - squeezing or something 06:29 - and level bands are holding the comb in 06:31 - place 06:46 - now someone may ask when do you come 06:50 - back and take those rubber bands out the 06:53 - answer is simple we don't 07:29 - we'll come back later this evening after 07:33 - things have quieted down and hopefully 07:35 - all these is down on the compost bin and 07:37 - would have moved up into that box and 07:40 - everybody will be be happy that way but 07:43 - every one of these situations is 07:45 - different so if you get a call for 07:49 - something like this go out see what 07:51 - you've got good luck thanks for watching 07:57 - [Music]

00:13hi I'm Jim - I'm John Grafton and we
00:19found a small beehive here that's moved
00:21into a compost bin small hive but it's
00:25in the wrong place
00:26bees in the wrong place don't work out
00:28well in the future so I'm gonna
00:30videotape it while John goes through the
00:32process of seeing if we can transfer
00:34this colony to a standard sized beehive
00:37you up for it we're gonna give it a shot
00:39okay then we're going to lift this top
00:44up and see just what's going on
00:46underneath just put a little smoke the
00:49kind of going in between the two pieces
00:51of wood here on the top so little smoke
00:54as we wouldn't if it was a normal
00:56beehive so I lift this up you can see
01:02the comb hanging from the lower side
01:06gently tin it over we don't really want
01:11to upset the bees out much we really
01:13want to try to keep everything as intact
01:16as possible
01:18what we've done is we have a standard
01:23frame without foundation without comb
01:26we've put some bubble bands around it
01:29just in preparation for this project and
01:33I think on this particular one I'm going
01:37to try to just cut each one of these
01:39pieces of comb off set them in this
01:44frame and then place them down into the
01:46colony so as we get ready to do this
01:49we're just going to try to take one
01:52piece of coma at a time this is just a
01:54small piece on the outside edge these
01:58beads it's not a big big bunch of bees
02:01in a big swarm
02:54okay there's one piece in the flame
02:57outlets if we can get this next piece
02:59off sometimes when you're taking these
03:06kind of colonies out of places that
03:09they're not supposed to be maybe it's a
03:12wall of a house maybe it's a tree that
03:16is blown down and get some pretty good
03:19slabs of comb and get stuff that's older
03:23than this so it's a lot stiffer than
03:25what this is I haven't actually seen the
03:28Queen
03:29I've only been about half looking for to
03:32be honest with you just so that we can
03:36if we do spot or we can make note that
03:40she is this she's you know we don't want
03:42to damage you in any way okay I've got
03:52enough room in that flame that I think
03:55this piece will fit right at the end of
03:58that so I'm going to jump around to this
04:00side see if I can't scrape it off
04:11[Music]
04:24okay now we've got those three little
04:26pieces of comb in that they're not held
04:30real tight
04:31they'll probably slip to the bottom we
04:34really don't want that to happen but
04:36it's just the size of them and the
04:38weight on they're gonna slide to the
04:39bottom of this flame when we turn it
04:41right-side up in them in the box
04:43I did see the Queen on that next piece
04:46we're going to gently turn this over so
04:51that we don't completely shake
04:52everything loose as we make the
04:54transition we try to just ease it down
05:00into this box now you can see those one
05:04two slide but they go in now it leaves
05:13us this one last piece to hell with the
05:16compost bin we've got two three down in
05:20the hive
05:25I don't see the Queen right now let you
05:31go this year there's a queen right had
05:35in the middle Stearns if she is moving
05:38right up across this way so see if I
05:44can't maybe get hold up and we'll just
05:46transfer her down down into yeah yeah a
05:54guy just got to buy the one wing which I
05:56really don't like to catch her that way
05:58but I'm God are there between my fingers
06:04and now she's trying not to squeeze it
06:07too much just gently enough you can hold
06:10on to it would drop her down into the
06:14box with the other B so it's already in
06:16there and then we know that she's in
06:18then we won't have to worry about
06:21squeezing or something
06:29and level bands are holding the comb in
06:31place
06:46now someone may ask when do you come
06:50back and take those rubber bands out the
06:53answer is simple we don't
07:29we'll come back later this evening after
07:33things have quieted down and hopefully
07:35all these is down on the compost bin and
07:37would have moved up into that box and
07:40everybody will be be happy that way but
07:43every one of these situations is
07:45different so if you get a call for
07:49something like this go out see what
07:51you've got good luck thanks for watching
